14dpf
14 dpf scan movie

This is a 360-degree OPT scan of a 14 dpf larval zebrafish head stained with Alizarin red, which labels mineralized tissue. Anterior is to the top. At this stage, many dermal bones of the pharyngeal skeleton are clearly visible (see 3D Viewer for full interactive model and annotations), including the dentary, maxilla, entopterygoid, urohyal, branchiostegal rays 1, 2, and 3, preopercle, interopercle, opercle, and subopercle. The parasphenoid of the neurocranium is visible, as is the cleithrum of the pectoral fin skeleton. Perichondral ossification also can be seen in chondral bones of the pharyngeal skeleton, including the retroarticular, quadrate, ceratohyal, symplectic, hyomandibula, and ceratobranchials 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Ossification is visible in the occipital cartilages at the posterior of the skull. Two otoliths are visible in each otic capsule, as are ossifications in the vertebrae and around the notochord.

This is a 360-degree OPT scan of an 18 dpf larval zebrafish head preserved and stained with Alizarin red, which labels mineralized tissue. Anterior is to the top. At this stage, more bony elements of the pharyngeal skeleton and neurocranium are ossified, compared to that seen at 14 dpf. The ossified fin rays of the pectoral fin skeleton are also visible.

Adult scan movie

This is a 360-degree OPT scan of an adult zebrafish head preserved and stained with Alizarin red, which labels mineralized tissue. Anterior is to the top. At this stage, the skull is fully ossified, so all elements of the pharyngeal skeleton and neurocranium can be seen, along with ossifications of the dermatocranium overlying the brain. Cartilage of the gill filaments, deep in the pharynx, appear darker.
